Uncertainty continues to surround the future of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgerswho has been a free agent since his release by the New York Jets in March.
What will Rodgers do next?
In recent weeks, the four-time MVP has held talks with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giantsand is yet to decide whether to continue playing in the NFL or hang up his cleats.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, Rodgers said “retirement could still be a possibility” and explained that a decision over his future has been delayed by personal issues.
“I have a couple people in my inner, inner circle who are battling some difficult stuff,” the 41-year-old said.
“So I have a lot of things that are taking my attentionand have since the beginning of January, away from football. That’s where I have been focusing most of my attention on.
“To make a commitment to a team is a big thingwhether you are a first-year player or 20-year vet.”
“Ain’t about the money”
Rodgers added that finances won’t be a major factor in his next move. “I told every single one of the teams I talked to, you know, it ain’t about the money. I’ll play for 10 ‘Ms’ (millions),” the Super Bowl winner explained.
“I don’t care. I never once said I needed a multi-year deal, (and reporting that I asked for) $30 million, $40 million is absolute bullshit. I said I’d play for 10. Whatever.”
No deadline on decision, Rodgers says
Rodgers has been particularly heavily tipped to join the Steelerswho have salary cap space and need to bolster their quarterback options, with only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson currently on their roster.
Noting that he doesn’t feel it is fair “to the Steelers or anyone to make a decision while I’m dealing with many things off the field,” Rodgers said Pittsburgh had not given him a deadline to agree a deal.
“I’ve been upfront with them about that, and said, ‘Listen, if you need to move on. If you need to do something, by all means. By all means,’” he told The Pat McAfee Show. “Nothing but love and respect if that’s the decision that needs to be made.”
A legendary NFL career
Drafted in 2005 by Green Bay, Rodgers spent 18 seasons with the Packershelping the franchise to the NFL title in Super Bowl XLV. He was named MVP in the championship-game win over the Steelers, and also won NFL MVP in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021.
Rodgers then spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Jetsbut missed his first year in New York through injury after tearing his Achilles tendon on his debut.
