On Wednesday, the NFL owners gathered to vote on the controversial Tush Push play. The Green Bay Packers brought forth the proposal to ban the play which the Philadelphia Eagles popularized. The ban needed 24 votes (75%) to pass. It received only 22. The Tush Push is here to stay…for now.

NFL’s fight to ban the Tush Push continues behind the scenes
The Tush Push was just two votes shy of being banned in the 2025 season. And every year since 2022, efforts to get rid of it have ramped up. So while it survives for one more season, it’s not looking likely to survive another in 2026.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said that the league will continue to study the play over the course of the season.
“We’ll see how it plays out this season,” Goodell said. “And then we’ll come back, and we’ll discuss those as we always do every year. What’s the right way to go forward? So, I think the discussion was helpful to us and what we want to focus on this season.”
Goodell was also asked what he thought about the proposal to ban the play. Though he claims to have a neutral stance, the league office was reportedly behind the efforts to push for a banenlisting the Packers to introduce the proposal in the first place.
As the vote on the Tush Push nears, it’s become clear that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is a strong proponent of banning it. And when Goodell pushes for change, it usually ends up happening. One source said today’s vote is expected to be a close one.

So it’s likely we’ll see another strong push from the league to ban the play next season, especially if they see more game disruptions (like offside penalties) as they did in the 2024 season. Goodell’s comments indicate that at the end of the 2025 season, the league will address the play yet again, and if they are pushing for a ban – and all it takes is two more votes – then there will likely be a ban…no matter how long Jeff Lurie goes on a tangent. Because behind the scenes, the NFL may quietly work to flip just a few more votes.
