On Saturday, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr announced his retirement from the NFL due to a shoulder injury. Though his decision provides some clarity for the team, it also leaves a void at the quarterback position.
Tyler Shough the answer for the Saints at QB?
Because of Carr’s injury, the Saints were already looking at the possibility of losing him for the season. Now that it’s a sure thing, they will evaluate their young quarterback groupconsisting of Tyler Shough, whom they drafted in the second round last month, second-year Spencer Rattler, and third-year Jake Haener.
Last season, the Saints were 0-7 in games Carr didn’t start. Head coach Kellen Moore has said that during OTAs, Shough, Rattler, and Haener will split reps, and they will compete for the starting role. Whether or not Shough would start immediately even if he wins the job is not certain, but he will definitely be a priority for New Orleans now.
Shough spent his first college season at Oregon before transferring to Texas Tech for the next three years. He then played at Louisville in his final college season. At Louisville, Shough threw for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.
“For me – I was going to come in regardless of him being here or not,” Shough said of Carr. “I think he’s he’s been such a high level player for so long. I think it would be a great opportunity to learn from him. And it’s also a great opportunity to continue to grow myself and be on this team with all the great coaches and guys on the team we have already. So I’m just excited, you know, for what’s forward and the rest of the offseason.”
