Quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future in the NFL is still uncertain after the New York Jets cut him loose. It’s looking like he’ll either sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who’ve put an offer on the table (one-year, $30 million), or retire for good.
But Rodgers has been taking his time making a decision. There was speculation at first that he was waiting it out to see if the Minnesota Vikings would offer him a deal. Then there was speculation that he’d wait until after the NFL Draft. Then it was, maybe he’s waiting until the schedule release to not influence Pittsburgh’s schedule. But none of those things had anything to do with it, according to Rodgers.
Rodgers breaks silence on NFL decision delay
The 41-year-old himself had already mentioned on “The Pat McAfee Show” that his delay was due to personal reasons. He didn’t get into specifics at the time, only mentioning that some people in his inner circle were going through a difficult time and that he was in the middle of a serious romantic relationship.
He’s now shared what those personal reasons are, and it’s emotional. During an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast this week, Rodgers offered more insight into what’s really been going on in his life and why he’s not made football his main focusmentioning that multiple people he’s close with are currently battling cancer.
“I figured it out during the last year when I’ve been in the weeds with these people who are close to me that have cancer,” Rodgers said.
Sportswriter Ian O’Conner believes that Rodgers will eventually sign with the Steelers, likely in time for mandatory minicamps, which begin June 10. But for now, as Rodgers told McAfee, he is “taking care of (his) people” and focusing on responsibilities outside of football.
