Just hours after the NFL owners gathered for a meeting in Eagan, Minnesota, the Indianapolis Colts announced the passing of long-time owner Jim Irsay. Irsay was 65 years old and the team said he died peacefully in his sleep.
Irsay’s daughters to take over as Colts owners
Irsay took over as the Colts owner following the death of his own father in 1997. At the time, Irsay was only 37 years old, the youngest-ever NFL owner. Now, his own children will take over for him, as he told the Indianapolis Star way back then – “We’re keeping 100% of the team that I’m passing on to my children.”
Irsay’s three daughters – Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Caseey Fung, and Jackson Calson – all hold the title of vice chair/owner already. Foyt joined the Colts’ front office in 2007, and has since been involved in marketing and community relations for the team. In 2008, Irsay-Gordon took on the title of vice president and is actively involved in the business side. Jackson was also named vice president in 2010, and focuses on the family’s community and philanthropic efforts. One of the daughters will be considered the principle owner, but it’s not a fixed position and can still rotate among them.
Irsay had dealt with some health issues and was open about his battle with addiction. In 2014, he entered a rehab facility and Irsay-Gordon took over the business side of things for the Colts during that time.
Irsay was considered one of the NFL’s most respected owners. In his 28 years as owner, he led the Colts to one of their most successful eras. From 1999 to 2014, they were in the postseason 14 times, won 10 division titles, appeared in four AFC title games, two Super Bowls, and even won the Super Bowl in 2006.
