The Pittsburgh Steelers long ago offered a contract to veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. And about a month ago, Rodgers spoke publicly for the first time since then, offering a whole lot of nothing on where he stands – whether he’d take a deal or not, whether he’d seek out other teams, or whether he’d just retire. All he really said was that personal issues were delaying his decision.
The NFL Draft came and went, and Rodgers still didn’t give an answer. But now, the rumors are that he could be nearing a decision very soon.
Rodgers nearing deadline on Steelers decision
A report by Mike Florio suggested that we can expect an announcement from Rodgers soon, as the Steelers’ OTAs begin on May 27.
“Common sense suggests that an answer is coming, sooner than later. Aaron Rodgers will, or won’t, sign a contract with the Steelers. Or, at a minimum, he’ll announce his intention to do so,” said Florio. “Pittsburgh’s OTAs begin on May 27. That’s only 16 days away. If he’s serious about being as ready as he can be for the looming football season, it makes sense to show up and get to know his teammates, coaches, etc.”
There have also been rumors that Rodgers may be delaying his announcement in order to avoid giving the NFL time to schedule too many early primetime slots or short-week games for Pittsburgh.
“And if the goal at this point is to delay the process long enough to keep the Steelers from being loaded up with extra early-season short-week and/or prime-time games (obviously, they can be flexed into more standalone games later in the year), the schedule hay presumably is in the barn,” said Florio. “If he announces, say, today that he’ll be a Steeler, it will be difficult for the NFL’s scheduling gurus to retreat to the bat cave and spit out a brand new configuration of 272 regular-season games.”
The NFL announced that they would release the full schedule for the 2025 season on Wednesday night, and Florio suggested another bold theory: Rodgers will announce the decision just minutes before the NFL 2025 schedule releasestealing the spotlight from the league completely.
“There’s one other possibility that would be hilarious if it happens. We’ve caught wind of the chance (and we have no idea how realistic it is) that Rodgers could announce or leak his plans at 7:45 p.m. ET or so on Wednesday, upstaging the schedule release planned for 15 minutes later.”
