After seven seasons with the team, it looks like Nick Chubb’s time with the Cleveland Browns has finally come to an end.
The running back was a second round pick for the Browns at the 2018 NFL Draft and he has been a brilliant performer for the team. He received four consecutive Pro Bowl nods from 2019 to 2022 but injury has disrupted recent seasons.
Cleveland selected two running backs in the 2025 draft and recently secured an extension for Jerome Ford. Those moved appeared to spell the end for Chubb and the front office has admitted that Chubb is now likely to move on.
“I wouldn’t rule anything out, but I would say it’s probably increasingly unlikely,” Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry said in an interview on Friday. “We do have two young guys that we like. We think Jerome plays a role. It’s basically kind of maybe seeing how the roles shake out in the running backs room.”
“Look, you’re never going to rule out someone as near and dear to our heart as Nick. And I would expect him to take another step, being another year removed from the injury. But I’d say maybe a return is less likely — at least in the short term — with us right now.”
Across his first five years with the Browns, Chubb was building a case to be one of the best running backs in franchise history. He averaged 140+ receiving yards per game in each of his first five seasons in the NFL but a serious knee injury sustained early in the 2023 season ruled him out for a year and appeared to rob him of some of his explosivity.
He returned to feature in eight games in 2024 but his usage was much lower and he slipped down the team’s pecking order.
Now approaching 30, the veteran RB will be a risk for teams looking to pick him up but there is real upside to the signing. Given his likely contract demands landing spots are limited, but the Chicago Bears and the Denver Broncos have be forwarded as potential destinations. The Bears are yet to bring in a big-name RB alongside D’Andre Swift, while the Broncos are lacking a physical backfield presence to compliment the 5ft 8in RJ Harvey.
