NFL quarterback announces retirement before playing a single professional game

As NFL teams continued to shuffle their rosters during the offseason, one player has been forced to make a tough decision regarding his own future.

Quarterback Jordan Travis was named ACC Player of the Year in 2023 while starring for the Florida State Seminoles. He was selected by the New York Jets in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft but has not been able to make a single appearance after sustaining a severe leg injury during his final season in Florida.

Now, one year on from that draft delight, Travis has announced his retirement from professional football. He confirmed the news in a handwritten statement posted on social media.

“On November 18th, 2023, my life and career took an unexpected turn,” Travis wrote. “I gave everything I had to the rehab process, but despite my efforts, my leg never responded the way we hoped. After much prayer and consultation with my doctors and medical team, I have been medically advised to retire from the game I love so deeply.”

He continued: “It is crazy how fast life can change. This is not the ending I had ever imagined, but I do trust The Lord’s Plan above all else.”

In his final college season Travis was a finalist for the Heisman Award and broke a number of records for FSU. The fateful injury came in November 2023 when his ankle twisted awkwardly under a dangerous hip-tackle against North Alabama. He has not returned to the field and the Jets have confirmed that Travis is officially leaving the team.

“Jordan has informed us of his intent to retire due to the injury he sustained while at Florida State,” general manager Darren Mougey said on Wednesday. “It is unfortunate that he was unable to get back on the field after working so hard. We support his decision and wish him only the best.”
