The San Francisco 49ers’ fairy tale with quarterback Brock Purdy has transformed into a financial nightmare. Once the Mr. Irrelevant turned bargain elite performer, Purdy is reportedly seeking a massive payday in the Dak Prescott range – $55-60 million a year.
49ers’ Brock Purdy dilemma
The 49ers reportedly offered Purdy a more modest deal of around $40 million a year, which his camp has completely ignored. Apparently they’re holding out for a bigger number.
Sports broadcaster Colin Cowherd warned the Niners against giving in to that demandcomparing Purdy to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott – and not in a positive way.
“Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott are the exact same player,” Cowherd said. “San Francisco, look at the Cowboys. Learn from what happened to Dallas.”
What happened to Dallas is that they made Prescott the highest-paid player in NFL history, and he failed to produce for half of the season before getting injured for the rest. Both Prescott and Purdy were late-round picks who were efficient when the rosters were loaded, but not necessarily strong enough to elevate weaker ones all on their own. Cowherd’s implying that paying Purdy the big bucks could leave the Niners over their budget and under performing.
Cowherd is certainly not alone in that line of thinking. 49ers insider Grant Cohn echoed his sentiments, and took it a step further, suggesting an even more drastic solution.
“Purdy isn’t worth franchise quarterback money,” said Cohn. “What the 49ers should do is embrace a full rebuild. Acknowledge that they could not win a Super Bowl with their current core group of players, trade them and move on. Build a new core of young players. Trade George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa and Brock Purdy. Finish the job they started this offseason when they traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders.”

The 49ers have already traded wide receiver Deebo Samuel and released other veterans to make room. Now, head coach Kyle Shanahan faces the dilemma of keeping the system in tact or breaking the bank for Purdy.
