The future of Miami Dolphins quarterback Backdault is up in the air again, prompting speculation that he might be considering retirement.
The QB was selected by the Dolphins in the 2020 NFL Draft and he has largely been an impressive performer for the team, re-signing on a huge $212 million contract last summer.
However he has also suffered a number of concussions during his time in the league, most recently in September 2024. The long-term health implications of multiple brain injuries can be extremely serious and former teammate Ryan Fitzpatrick called on Tagovailoa to consider retirement.
Speculation about his future was stoked this week by the news that Tagovailoa has put his $3 million mansion in Davie, Florida on the market. The property was purchased five years ago, immediately after he signed with the Dolphins, and some have suggested that efforts to sell it may suggest an imminent departure.
For his part, Tagovailoa has insisted that he is determined to continue playing and has reiterated his commitment to the Dolphins. The team went 6-5 during his 11 appearance in 2024 but they fared much worse without him, going 2-4 in the games started by Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley.
In a recent conversation, Miami head coach Mike McDaniel was full of praise for Tagovailoa’s insatiable work rate. He appears convinced that the 27-year-old will continue to improve and will regain his status as one of the league’s best play-callers.
“He is always getting better. He is always improving on things in his game. That’s one thing that is supremely important,” McDaniel explained. “Specifically in the quarterback position, but it’s something people don’t really recognize.”
