The truth behind ‘UNTOLD: The Fall of Favre’: Here’s when it premieres and what you can expect

Netflix’s “Untold” is a series of sports documentaries that explores the complex stories of famous sports figures, from Manti Te’o’s catfish story to boxer Jake Paul’s start as a YouTouber. And coming up later this month, one episode will feature the story of former NFL quarterback Brett Favre.

“The Fall of Favre”

In his prime, Brett Favre was famous for leading the Green Bay Packers to become Super Bowl champions. He played in the league for 20 seasons, winning MVP three times. Unfortunately, as it turned out, he wasn’t so great off the field, though that often went overlooked for the sake of his big name.

In the first of many high-profile scandals that Favre was involved in, he was accused of sending inappropriate texts, voice messages, and photos to New York Jets “Gameday” host Jenn Sterger during the 2008 football season. The NFL investigated the claims in 2010, but did not find sufficient evidence. He received only a fine of $50,000 for not cooperating. “Untold: The Fall of Favre” explores the public’s willingness to look the other way since Favre was a beloved star.

Sterger said that Favre obtained her number despite her refusal to give it to him herself. The scandal derailed her career. “Brett Favre ultimately destroyed my life,” Sterger says in the trailer for the series.

In 2022, Favre was caught up in a huge welfare funds scandal. He was accused of knowingly receiving $8 million which was intended for welfare programs. Favre denied the allegations and filed a defamation lawsuit against the State Auditor of Mississippi as well as two journalists for the coverage of him in this case.

The documentary was directed by Rebecca Gitlitz and executive produced by Gitlitz, Ian Orefice, Jonna McLaughlin, Amanda Spain, Dave O’Connor, Loren Hammonds, Jon Wertheim, A.J. Perez, Ben Silverman, Howard Owens, Chapman Way, and Maclain Way, produced by EverWonder Studio, Front Office Sports, and Time Studios.

Netflix will premiere Favre’s story, “The Fall of Favre” on Tuesday, May 20.

“This story about one of the greatest quarterbacks in history goes beyond touchdowns and epic wins and lifts the lid on how, when fame rises, sometimes accountability falls,” said Gitlitz. “It was made with the intention of laying out patterns of behaviors, told by the people who lived with the consequences of Favre’s actions, to ask audiences to consider if success should be a shield for harmful behavior.”
